Visitors From Another Time

by Nancy Ames

We are always,as we
move through life,
peeling back layers
of innocence.

We say to ourselves,
"How could I ever
have been so naive?"

Then, as often as not,
we shed somebody.

Finally, one by one,
we arrive at our
cynical, withered,
stubborn cores.

To the young people,
we must look
something like aliens,
like visitors
from another time.

Therefore,
amid the inevitable
and continuous
passage of time,
recall that
eternity is
also always
present.

Author's Note: A poem sharing a few thoughts that I find comforting as I grow older.
