escaping (v. 2)

by Emily Davidson

at home
he cannot sit still
his fears begin to
flood his mind
as soon as he
slows down

and this
he cannot stand

he searches for
a way to
silence the quiet
voice inside him
who is begging
for a listener

if the distraction is too subtle,
he can still hear the murmur of worry

so he puts on his coat
and enters the night,
surrounds himself with
all the people
he’s named as friends

he’s drinking beers,
giving hugs, laughing loudly
absorbing the admiration
reveling in the liberation

but the next night
he is restless again

only when he has
nowhere left to run
will he find happiness

Great last verse, that made me think.
