Little Bird

by Aaron Blair

Listen.
You know what I know,
but I could still tell you.
I haven't yet used my allotment of words.
I'll hold you like a small bird,
in the palm of my hand,
and when your heart beats faster
than my mind can comprehend,
I'll clench my fist and crush you,
no malice intended,
but a killing all the same.
Everything wants to find its own place.
We nest inside the things
that tell us who we should be.
So I'll grow old in this skin,
but I'll never own it,
always wishing, instead
for a shell to confound my predators.
Still, one day the wind will bear me up,
with no regard to who I was or who I wasn't,
and when you can't find me anymore,
you'll remember all the words
that floated past you unnoticed
and wonder if I ever said anything
that could have prevented you
from making every same tedious mistake.

"We nest inside the things / that tell us who we should be" is a very insightful claim indeed. I loved the whole thing, but these two lines resonated.

An exhausting, almost rambling (in a good way) thought. There was a manic quality to this that I quite loved.

Well, I totally agree with Vince and Gabe. And yeah, we do end up nesting and I can only hope that I am able to distinguish between what I should be and what I could be.

I agree with Vince, this poem is insightful indeed...I loved: "Everything wants to find its own place./ We nest inside the things/ that tell us who we should be./ So I'll grow old in this skin,/ but I'll never own it," and "one day the wind will bear me up,/ with no regard to who I was or who I wasn't,"...loved coming across this, happy reading/writing...peace, jewels xo
