I Hate Valentine's Day

by Aaron Blair

I should be grateful that you love me,
that anyone could love me,
since I'm so fucked up.
This is what you would say,
if you knew how to say it with fewer words.
Of course there are more words.
You've never written haiku.
The sad thing is that I am grateful.
The starving dog loves table scraps.
It views them as a feast.
Your actions take the shade of nobility,
by sheer dent of not being cruel.
There's no hand to flinch away from,
because there's no hand at all,
and I'm so beaten down,
my skin feels the absence of bruises
and swears to itself that it's love.
The way you feel for me is charity,
and I'm too poor to turn it down.

Author's Note: My boyfriend has a knack for ruining holidays. Naturally, he thinks it's my fault. I actually expect things to go well. Stupid me.

Sorry to hear that, although I think this poem is pretty vicious, outstanding stuff.

He should be the grateful one. It took me 28 years to find the love of my life. She is worth every second I waited for her.

I'm sorry that you hate Valentine's day...I'm not such a fan either, but this fabulous work was worth it (at least for me).
