broken blood vessel

by Ava Blu

my checkered-blue blanket was hanging off the bed a little,
there was a friend on the couch
there was a fire breathing down our necks
and our embrace,
our fucking embrace was no longer functioning

you go to the stairs outside to smoke,
to bang on the window
to hold me ten feet away

it was never supposed to last
we said a year,
maybe less
to find something out
and it happened after only a few weeks of knowing each other
it happened on the back of a milk carton

i know what it’s like to be the last person awake at night
to go into a 24hr grocery store around 4:15am desperate for conversation
this is california
and this is you crying while you sleep
reaching out for los angeles
buying the last bottle of cheap wine
begging for pennies
begging for laundry day to hurry
just so you can be around people again
this is arizona
this is your friend Sam
this is the reason we buy no-name brand cola
and 4 gallons of milk at a time
and this is your road-trip
this is your body sleeping in the back of a truck

you know what it’s like to be beaten
you know how it feels to have the person you love bruise you with their teeth
you won’t let them pull you out
you want this story for your book,
your novella
your next small-time thing
you will dedicate it to me,
saying something witty yet cliche about the best year of your life
about swimming in the neighbor’s backyard when they weren’t home
about watching all 9 seasons of seinfeld snuggled below that checkered-blue blanket

you will fool around with the html
you will create something unique!
something even your roommates will wake up to see
you will call heads when it was clearly tails all along

and you will not catch it when it’s thrown.

This is a masterpiece. I really can't think of much more to say.
