the black and white between us by Ava Blu
what happened to the light in the dark when your eyes opened for me
what happened with the kiss of a lifetime,
the embrace of a year
and the longing in a relationship developed behind my back
what happened to the black and white between us
what path would have been better?
what would they have said if they’d met you?
i can hear the music when you walk,
a note here and there
a squirrel climbing up the tree
a hand strung over my thigh
a look that means nothing
i see the stairs now when we
dance, when we are,
when we remember it all
and i have not seen
the water feel
so good
before.

| Posted by Gabriel Ricard on 02/11/10 at 08:48 PM It's not just enough for you to write something with this much longing, this much hard-fought beauty. You have to give it a form and even a background that lend themselves so well to the point you nail with those words. With some writers this would feel gimmicky as hell, but you manage to avoid that and use this form and background to make your point even stronger. I also love the hell out of that last stanza. |

The technique here is original in many respects, especially given the title, and I adore the sentiment for the power in its despair. Very nice job, Ava. |
