How Dan Won The West (or an ode to Pickup Trucks)

by Charles M Harrison

Back when the west was the new Frontier
men still fought rustlers, chased women and drank beer.
It took a Titan to tame that barren, and wicked land,
listen while I tell the tale of one named Dan.

He was born in a Canyon up in the Sierra Madre.
Out on the Tundra with the bison and the wolf he would play.
He roamed the Dakota Territory till he became full grown
tough, ornery, with a head like a Ram was how he was known.
The Indians never knew what to make of our Dan,
cause he was nothing like any other white man.

Tacoma, it’s where he tried to settle down for a while,
but he was not happy unless traveling mile after mile.
He could do the work of three men, now I tell you truly
that’s how the earned the nick name of Super Duty.
His favorite horse had a name we thought queer.
He was always yelling when she ran off F-150 get back here.

Colorado, that’s where we next pick up his trail
it seems a little misunderstanding landed him in jail.
It was said by some that he stole a mans horse,
there was more to the story than this of course.
He found the poor animal wandering without a shoe,
but Dan being Dan he knew just what to do.
The owner found them when he had shod the horse.
He started cursing, and yelling, turned red, of course.
Our Dan stood at trial all straight and tall
as friend after friend answered the witness call.
The horse’s owner would not give or budge.
Our Dan was set free, never held a grudge.

Ranger, said the badge that he wore for a spell
In Texas he rode and lived through more stories to tell.
As he got older he developed a limp in his walk,
how it happened, well he just would not talk.
I heard though that he was up on a Ridgeline,
got swept away in an Avalanche and trapped in a mine.
He was stuck for awhile and in so much pain
people say it’s why he was a little touched in the brain.
Now from here on out the story gets kind of touchy
the trail twists and turns and facts are all sketchy.

Silverado, it’s where most folks think Dan was bound
a lot believe that’s where he can still be found.
Rumor has it he tried to be a gentleman and lend a hand
but ran afoul of a jealous kind of man.
So if you go to that town you may find him there still
laid to rest six feet under somewhere up on boot hill.
