Those I’ve Left Behind

by Susan Q Tomas

I use to live my life with you.
You took care of business. I took care of the children.
I abdicated control of my life to you
and you abused that power.
Now I have taken control back. You drop the kids off
I greet them with hugs and kisses, but to you I do not wave
Goodbye.

You told me you loved me. You said we were soul mates. It was a lie.
Thank God I held a rainbow in my hands.
You saw the crescent, I saw the whole of the moon.
Your MD, your Ph.D. from a prominent university didn’t help you.
You are intelligent, but I am wise.
Enjoy your life in the cage you created for yourself.
Goodbye.

I use to spent time with them, my neighbors whom I thought were my friends.
Many hours talking, drinking, smoking, talking.
Now I don’t waste time with them.
God rescued me from that plight, all I can do is pray for them.
They say the love me, they miss me, but they only mean me harm.
They watch me as I drive away in my car like prisoners behind a fence.
Goodbye.

Life is not a fairytale.
