Opening Night

by Rachel Bennett

there's slack-jawed infatuation
and paranoia of the eyes

when the curtain first drags apart
into a foggy castle scene
and onto shirtcuffs and shoulder puffs,
vibrato and recitatives,

and when the characters haven't all died yet.

Author's Note: It's opening night! Shameless plug: Check out IU Opera's streaming performance of "Lucia di Lammermoor" at 8pm ET 5, 6, 12, 13 Feb. http://music.indiana.edu/iumusiclive/streaming/ (I'm the tiny dot playing third horn.)

The ending is seriously awesome -and can I say that I am totally thrilled you're a part of that opera?! That must be an amazing experience!!
