16 days into the month

by Ava Blu

the notion hiding under your hat isn’t enough to keep me around
i can see how you might think differently
i can appreciate the reasoning,
the logic
and the defense of the language used

but your eyes often shift
and i’ve warned you about learning the tell-tale signs of a lion learning to lie
he is not king of the jungle around here,
he is under the bushes outside
and he is furrowing his brow
as you typetypetype emails
and forum posts
and status updates
and links to comics and movies and and
and anything other than
me

sixteen days into february i will be 30
and it will feel like march
and it will feel like the lion isn’t running away

i will buy you the hat you want
i will watch you wear it,
i will wait for you to ask me why

i will not shift my eyes when i lie.

I love the images of the lion and the hat. Anyone can take a couple of seemingly unrelated concepts and swear to the reader up and down that they're connected in some meaningful way. You're one of those rarities who can combine the seemingly unrelated to tell a story so rich and striking in its imagery and detail that we as the reader can't imagine a time when those seemingly unrelated concepts were unrelated at all, if that makes any sense. This is just great, great work.
