Empty Cage, Door Open

by Rachel Bennett

it's one of those optimist illusions
with the side of the bars you came from,
and no bar exam or sports bar can account
for the bars that measure our growth,
that stunt or accelerate it,

because an empty cage, door open
can make a heart jump or fall
(and the hand that holds the key
belongs to the teeth gnashing in fear).

Good write lady. And the bars shall grow untill we tear them down.

Ms. Bennett, This is a jewel! Its heartfelt and frustrating because ...ugh!... its so true. Its hard to soar with wings of broken promises. This hit my soul. ~N
