The realistic prince charming
by Angie JenkinsIf you weren't blind, perhaps you'd see how I stare into your eyes,
longing for you to smile
so that I could see the adorable dimple in your left cheek.
Or possibly you’d see my eyes pleading with you to stay
as you insistently claim that you’ll “miss the bus.”
If you weren't deaf, perhaps you’d hear me sob when
you didn’t call…again.
Or listen to the amount of times I swore to all my friends
that you’re the one
I’m meant to marry.
If you weren’t mute, maybe you’d proclaim your love to me
like those cheesy black and white films I saw as a child,
or the fairytales every woman dreams may someday come true.
But we will never be, for you are my worst fear:
the realistic prince charming.
You are deaf.
You are blind.
You are mute.
And I am forgotten.

Your poem proves the point of the worst kind of unrequitted love--literature and pop culture love songs has made the subtlest of rejections the worst of heartbreaks. Thanks for sharing :) |
