good-bye lover

by Ava Blu

i wake up coughing
my bones shake
my hair moves in circles
and my mouth is open,
yawning,
begging
and attempting to suck you in.

i sleep with a phone under my pillow;
it is my gun,
it is my shelter
and it is a third limb.

i believe you can see me when you're typing,
i believe you can see out of the corner,
catch a little glimpse
catch me staring out your window
catch me with my hands bound above my head
catch me in order to keep me.

there was a lesson long ago that i never did learn
and there was a reason why i always cough

but now i forget

i forget.

if you could describe the perfect day,
if words existed,
memories served
and wishes granted;
would you even notice?

i am dressed in black
and i am singing in-between each cough
and you are sighing so loudly
i hear you
each sigh feels like a tornado
and i wonder how you have the breath left
and i can’t think of a perfect moment
and i can’t think of what made you grow

and i am only scratching the surface.

I have a feeling this was written in your head long before it was committed to paper. I'd guess it came to form in your mind around two, three in the morning, when the physical and mental have joined forces to keep you from falling asleep. A lot of the great writers do their work that way, and I suspect a lot of your stuff, this one in particular comes about in that fashion. This is beautiful, saddening and endlessly powerful verse, written at times in mode that's almost but not quite along those stream of consciousness lines. I love that third stanza most of all.

This feels like a mix of conscious and subconscious imagery, half in this world, half in some nightmare concoction, where you're trying to survive in both and you aren't quite solid in either...but the pain certainly is. A wonderfully chilling and poignant write Ava...thank you for sharing it.

... I love the stream of consciousness running through this.....
