Her Birds

by Michael Defries

She knows something about their nature
The flutter, their wings, and sit on perches
Infinite memories like elephants,
She watches them in their glory.

Chirping and fighting, and floating above,
They dance and pray, and call, and hunt
They mate and create and watch all over.

These hummingbirds buzz like silent
You feel the flash as they swoon-on-by
Bright brilliant chest armor radiant heat
They sleep one eye to the wind.

Night sleeps watch over their precious
Little ones and bodies move slight mass
Perched morningside they guard life
Amassed at the feeder - branches see all.
