Gunpowder and Bayonets

by Rachel Bennett

remember tearing through these mountains
to make way for railroad spikes
when gunpowder and bayonets were
yardsticks of civilization?

these dimwits had no culture
no ballet, carriages, tennis
they barely wore clothing!

but now they'll learn to love this.

"yardsticks of civilization." That is brilliance.

I agree with Vince. I also think that this would be a tremendous beginning to a more expansive discourse on the Guns, Germs, and Steel theory.

Also, I was thinking that, though "gunpowder and bayonets" is a good title and combination of words in general, that, when they are right up against the "yardsticks of civilization" allusion, the word gunpowder might be better as something different, like "rifles".

And when gunpowder and bayonets were "modern technology"...in some way those were the times -in others, oh the horror! I am just loving all of these pieces -it's just such a great daily little burst of fun for me and I know that while you'll probably be relieved when you don't have to churn one out every day, I'm going to miss it!!
