Enticing The Buddha

by Michael Defries

Thank you for believing in me Dogen,
You portrayed the skills of a parent.

While maintaining the prowess of a Buddha
Conveyed Dharma with skillful transmission
while waiting for my lotus to blossom.

What it needed was cold dirt, in which to
plant solid roots, drinking from the stream.
While all the while I meditated; | It grew.

This is the seduction of enticing the Buddha
Nature; is the calmity within. But the mind
without quiet is a lotus without mud.
