legend in my spare time

by Nanette Bellman

they all had the same thoughts going through their heads,
"that is such a beautiful picture..."

undeniably, it was.

my arms crossed in front of me, i stood in a corner.
i watched them move from the picture to the flowers.
fondling the cards and stealing occasional inhales of allergens.

across the room, there stood more.

i watched as some embraced others
and with their faces peered over shoulders,
i could see the tears stream.

the commotion turned to a silence
and they gathered silently.

i took a seat in the back row.

some stood up and spoke about what they thought everyone else should hear.
they created a fiction novel beautiful enough to go with the picture.

my eyes danced among the backs of heads.
watching the consolation of a few and the punch line of the joke to others.
how many of these tears had meaning
and how many were fake for the amusement of others i already knew.

"let us pray" was spoken and all the heads bowed.

every person with open eyes wasn't praying along.
they prayed for themselves.
at least, that's what they should have been doing...

they need to find the solace in themselves
to stop lying about their lives.

even though my life wasn't perfect, i never denied that fact.
i embraced my faults, my wrongs, my mistakes.
i bared my scars with pride.

i left behind something...
more than a beautiful picture.

undeniably, i did.

You have already created a legacy that is born of talent, generosity and intelligence -and a fierce sense of survival, justice and strength...and though it comes with scars both physical and emotional, though you can't claim that you always said and did the right thing, though you know that sometimes you cause tears as much as shed them -you are more than a beautiful picture -you are someone that will be remembered in the bones and the soul.

First off, I love the title. This actually reminds me of a poem I wrote a long time ago, and one I had hoped would be something more like what you came up with here. Lovely work Nan.

Quite simply, this is vivid. A great narrative -- a short-story turned poem. I enjoyed the edginess and sass in this, and like a good story, there's somewhat of a cliff-hanger! What does that last line mean? Definitely has me wondering... all around terrific write, Nanette!
