Porcelain

by Richard Vince

Her face is perfectly white and shiny,
But I like to see smiles.
I catch them in mirrors behind bars,
In crowds and in cafés and behind counters.

She will not risk one, lest
Cracks appear in her flawless face.
I wait in vain for one to catch her
Unawares, and send her cold, hard mask
Crashing in fragments to the floor
To reveal the person inside.

Such an interesting message to convey to the world on what seems like a few women who have caught your interest in the world of advertising... this coming from a marketing/pr major... ;) ~N

Very nice Vince. I've seen and known that never or rarely changed the expression on their face. Some seemed as if the world was near or had already ended. And then those who have a smile etched permanently on their face making you wonder what their view of reality really was.

That careful, cautious, hidden moment that is elusive and enchanting...the smile caught unawares...this is lovely -and so very true for, not just women, men as well. Sometimes, it is one of the most amazing things, to see the way a smile can alter your entire perception of someone.

But if she didn't have something to hide would you be as interested? heh lovely words as usual.

I'm tempted to regard this as a variation on a theme, a contrast to the permanent smile and wave of one dedicated to projection of personality. Here is presented the epitome of expressionless superficiality. I guess a measure of contempt could be inferred from the 'porcelain' appearance, from which convenient connotations can be pulled. But that's just my chain of thought, and I flush the idea accordingly...

With the falling of the mask, so doth our minds, and with the revealing of her actuality, something blossoms in us. Great imagery here, Vince. I've read this over and over and it tells me that it loves to be whispered.

Your writing here is like a chisel revealing simple truths ...
