Thank you Dogen! He sat with me,

I asked him many delights,
but he just stared as if to say
my questions are empty as a knife
with no blade.

Or, they insult his intelligence
because of the profundity
of idiotic, in nature.

He just stared, watching me fumble
like some acorn, reaching ground
with a skipping-thud.

I wanted to learn this wisdom,
but something not clicking,
this spark sitting, in the center
of a lake with no bridge.

For some reason my neural-synapses
entered hiatus, not from the secular
but from being beaten, over-and-over
with bamboo canes and face-plants
at the Master's feet.

One day this grass will not cut
beneath my pedestal, but I will
walk in the shade of enlightenment.

For now,
figure-out why he just stared
through-past me, as if the Buddha
stands - behind me - before him.
I will pay attention next time,
if there is a Dharma.
