the death of Mr. Sophistication

by Ava Blu

your persona
with the flask in your coat pocket
full of rum you really hate the taste of,
but you drink anyway

the flask reads,
“jesus died for our sins”

but you say you believe in god

take a swig,
take one every time another 14 year old girl looks 18

you have your conventions,
your convictions;
can you tell the difference anymore?

take a swig
take one every time the girl in your bed isn’t me
every time the song you hear slices your wrist one more time

have your smoke while you peer down at me
have your smoke while your lungs expand
have your rum
have another drink for the bruises on your legs

you get shot down through every floor of the hotel
take another swig
the elevator opens,
the bell may be ringing,
just take another swig to help your head stop aching

this isn’t the apocalypse,
you aren’t really going to hell yet;

it’s just the death
of Mr. Sophistication.

Well it's a pretty heady mix, at any rate. You use some fairly simple language to paint some pretty strong, almost lyrical images of this persona. This reads like an introduction to a much larger story, and I really like that quality in it. The ending is particularly striking.

And what a mix!!! A headlong rush into decline, decay and death, no mercy on the way down...fantastic imagery here Ava!

...no mercy but no remorse either -- a far more damning trait IMHO. Anyway, the image from this is crystal clear. Great job, Ms. Blu.

Love the opening stanza especially.

Whoa! I don't know whether to look for him in the obituaries, on a milk carton, or a wanted poster... this is so good. The back story of this character seems intense. Really like this piece! ~N
