Ashby

by Nicole D Gregory

I sat quietly on the side
of a hill
The angel in my arms
Wings broken
Eyes empty

How do I save you?

Sometimes I talk in whispers
like when its important
that’s what God hears
He listens for the heart

What can I do?

Human imperfection can’t give a
blessing or produce a cure
As much as I want to
my sins amount to much more
of playing the devil’s game
than abiding God’s principles

I want to help
I hope you know that

A crushed spirit understands
how great the fall has been
for those who call God friend
When eyelids are so heavy
with grief that they can’t
be lifted

You are a gift
A reminder of three and seven

So I will sit quietly
It’s a hill
not a cliff

Angel
You will mend

One way or another
you will heal
Tears are reality
Cleansing the soul
Cleaning the wounds

I will stay by you

From where we’re at
what has yet to be reached
what has been
what is on the other side
what is out in the distance

Makes no difference

Silence denotes strength
I will quietly wait
We are all made in His image
and He is love

Take the time you need

Angel
You are loved

Author's Note: 13Jan2023 - I just found out through text message that Ben Ashby took his life this week. The world lost a wonderful person and artist. RIP dear friend. ~N ************************************************************This is for you. Love, ~N (12/18/15 -> I'm sorry about your dad; and the piece your wrote about/for him... amazing. I can hear the acoustic guitar and if I could sing... I know how my heart hears it; but that's not what the rest of the world would hear. You have done a great thing - please publish it to honor your dad, his memory and your love for him through such a profound piece. I'm always your friend and fan. ~N)

So very sweet this is... it whispers on its own. I think the third stanza was my favorite.

You are an angel's angel, Nicole.
