Not Alone

by Michael Defries

I guess she never really knew
that she saved me from myself.
That she talked me off the ledge
from my suicidal place.

I told her that she was
the only one there.

The only light in the darkness
and the only voice of reason.

She saved me in those months
and I thought she knew.

But I only told her
that she saved my life.

She didn't know that I spoke
in code.

It meant, I wasn't alone.
