Why We Do It - The Daily by Michael DefriesIt’s not every day that I get to sit here and listen
Waiting for the birds to chirp, to tell me to awaken
My dream world retired, coffee, breakfast, news.
Head out into the daily, facing traffic, lines, chaos
Working for a paycheck, searching for next
It’s no wonder people are so disgusted with it.
They all have reasons, I did, for what drives them
Family, self preservation, hobbies, the crisp smell
Of the copier, the way their office chair sits, the
Way the perfume tastes of the person next to them
The cologne wafting from your secret crush, all of
The little things, then there’s returning home.
See the smiling faces of the loved ones searching
Your eyes, or instead the great recliner and the bowl
Of popcorn joining you for a movie on your flat screen.
Always faithful man’s best friend can’t wait to go out
This is why we do it. Stare day after day at the monotony
Of a computer screen, pushing paper, selling your soul
Making profits for the almighty, and the corporation
Is getting fatter while your fridge is getting emptier
Just go home and retire your day and have a cold beer.
No answers, just living it out like the rest of us.
One day soon you too can dream of larger and greater just
For now endure, with a smile, until life gets fresh again. 10/21/2009 Posted on 01/13/2010 Copyright © 2025 Michael Defries
