Old-And-Grumpy Tired Man

by Michael Defries

Why am I here
Why am I here in this dump again

As if growing up in a back water town
Was not enough to endure

I have to wash my clothes in the tub
For heaven’s sake, do angels do laundry

I wonder for whatever is my broken spirit
Gonna smoke some more crack for it’s the
Burning in my throat that I like best

I use to want to be someone such as a
Teacher or a mechanic but I’m here
Workin' as a window installer,

I like the days when it rains
Cause I watch the beads
Move and wash away the clean

It drains me to see the ancients carry their
Groceries, in to their little cottages and fab
Homes, and looks like the plastic will rip
Right through them.

I don’t like it when the roosters
Knock on my morning door at 5 am

In the winter I like to sleep in
Cause the cold crawls up your leg

From the foot of your bed
The ice tries to keep you

I'm not young like I use to
I'm just an old and grumpy, tired man.
