canned hawaiian pineapple

by Frankie Sanchez

{we drove northbound on a highway and i glanced at you from the passenger seat. you were you. and once again the idea of a trinity made sense to me. you are, in this present moment, even when the car is parked, you are the driver and the seat belt and the highway. i am passenger. we don't need a map.}

sometimes i express myself with more caution than a construction site,
some of the roads ahead might be unevenly paved,
there may be a pothole or two,
we may have to yield
or merge
or brake
but we will never lose sight of the road,

and please know
that in any event i’ll placard my work area with warning signs,
i’ll redirect traffic accordingly,
i’ll measure everything twice,
i’ll build for you a shower with perfect water pressure,
i’ll hang the toilet paper in the direction you prefer,
i’ll stock our pantry with a lifetime supply of
canned hawaiian pineapple
and boston baked beans,

and when the work is done,
i’ll clean up the mess,
i promise.

This poem was extraordinary. Although I usually don't gravitate toward the conventional "love poem," this introduced a whole new dimension. The images were wonderful and pertinent and the emotion was truthful and sincere. Beautiful write, I hope to read more from you in the new year :)

When I see that Frankie Sanchez had something in the recently posted section, I damn near peed myself...with joy of course. ;) You find the simpliest things in life and convey them with the extreme emotion that is you. As always, it was a pleasure reading this piece.

i'll build you a shower with perfect water pressure. NICE. fun little traffic ditty here...using all the metaphors one could ask for. maybe more relaxed than your typical piece, but still elegant and with your traditional voice of desperation. yum yum
