Jan. 2 - Parallelism

by Jason Wardell

The new year started with a splash
as I was born anew of hundred-
degree water bubbling off me
as I mimed a fallen angel
atop the hard-packed
snow, the numbed
ground, patching
holes, freezing,
running back,
repeating

The new year started with a splash
as I was born anew of ice cubes
into my drink for the first toast
comprised of one part regret
for the past, one part desire,
one part longing for the
future, one part fear,
I was shaken and
consumed and
repeating

The new year started with a splash
as I was born anew of champagne
bubbling atop the bottle, without
time to spare, ten, nine seconds
and eight, seven, six glasses to
fill, the last thing I had to do
this year, the first mistake I
make in the next, five left
four left, and only three
two, one, happy new
year, I never liked
Auld Lang Syne
but I sing it
every year,
can't help
repeating

The new year started with a splash
as I was born anew, head propped
with one arm, the other pushing
off against the bathroom floor,
though I knew where this night
would take me, I let it.

It helps me remember
the year I'm leaving
and the one waiting,
the one repeating.

Very nice write Jason. We do tend all too often to repeat our mistakes. But we can start a new year any time we choose. It is just not always that easy as with the razor - shave or cut! Again, nice write.

I wish I could play around with form like this. Very subtle but still great at grabbing my attention and keeping it there with some tremendous lines and images (the third stanza being my favorite). Really nice.

I love the repetition of the theme. You did an amazing job summarizing the feelings I think most of us have on December 31st, and the form is beautiful. It reads so smoothly. Nice job!

I didn't think it would be possible, but you seem to impress me even more everytime I read your work.
