the lines don't have to be thin when it comes to love and hate

by Nanette Bellman

when we stomped our feet, we broke the street.
fine cracks now wrinkle the smooth cement
even more than they did before.

we could explode a hole big enough to swallow the moon in one gulp
but you still won't see the bigger picture like i do.

that we've created these lines.
that with every person you and i talk to,
telling our own versions of the same story
we are implanting in the subconscious
the idea of crossing lines.
the idea of choosing sides.

deciding who is the lesser or the two evils.
i know they look at you like you're a hero.
i'm not saying i'm a saint in this, but i ain't the only sinner.

and you can tell me that this is all an illusion in my mind
and i will tell you that this is the truth in our lives.

because there are people you and i talk to,
there are reasons why some no longer speak to me or include me,
and there are reasons why some no longer speak to you.
there are reasons why we avoid the same places at the same times.

we stand on the other side of these lines we've drawn,
we've created, no matter how thin or thick.

we made this battlefield.
