The Ice Took Me

by Michael Defries

The ice under my feet,
So big and strong I was,
Naïve were my thoughts
I walked with presence.

It reached up from the
Paved walk, it touched
The soul of my boot,
Cold shock as I flew
Ever so gracefully.

Up to its center of
Strength, which uprooted
Me. For it had strength
And knowledge too, and
Was teaching me to be
Mindful.

To know that every moment
Is Zen-full.

I burst into embarrassing
Laughter, my teacher
Showed me enlightenment
And I was taught embrace.

I used no hand to catch
My vessel. Just my mind
Guided me,

So profound
I did contemplate as I
Looked to see if there
Were spectators.

Only Nature The Snow,
The Trees, The Grass,
The Wind, The Sky,
The Earth.

My brother silently
Watching from above
The Ice that took me
From below.
