Softly Spoken Words

by Michael Defries

From a long and distant place
You whisper, “I love you”.
Across the divide
My mind fades into
A semi-conscious state

And for the next thirty minutes
I can think of nothing but you.

First, I glow inside
As I hear your soft whisper
Saying it so soft,
With your dulcet voice

A slight, ever so slight, rasp
So slowly, with deep heartfelt
Which reaches every instinct
Of self preservation in
Every being on the planet.

Sleeping now,
Echoes of images of faces
Of the people I saw today
Glimpses of something real

That is now only my remembrance
Of the fading awake-ness
Yet, I still think of you,
So clearly

It penetrates this transitional
Bringing me back to alertness
Holding you, Holding on to you
So tight that I won’t lose you

Holding hope is the chord of
Future promise I need to feel
Let me in I pray

“Be with me one more time” I pant
As you whisper those dear words

It creates warmth and light
It encompasses all who know not
It leads lost souls back home
It resonates a universal calling.

Determine that poetry is your heart
Your emotion Your passion Your forte
Your craft. Wield it again.

Before I close my eyes only so that
I can hear those words before I die.
Had you not uttered them I may now
Realize for it is I Who loves you.
