Hiccup

by Alison McKenzie

“Most relationships are ridiculous!”
This is what my gut screams,
Along with the effects of
Yesterday’s coffee,
As if there is nothing
More important to talk about
Than what might happen after.

I know my fragility
Doesn’t exactly present itself
On first impression
Hiding the fractures
Of shattered promises
Under layers of duct tape
And weathered beatings.

My gut screams,
“Can you not see how futile,
When even just an honorable mention
Is too much to hope for?”
My gut screams.

Just another hiccup,
A brief, but all-consuming, distraction.
Hold your breath,
Swallow hard before the exhale
And I'll disappear
Like I was never there.
