Already Awake

by Alison McKenzie

The alarm clock blares.
I’m already awake,
Been awake for hours,
But still sleepy,
Wishing I could crawl back into bed.

Life is crazy busy,
Bustling past me
While I chill in the blur.
Life and I,
We are taking memories
At different speeds these days.

I know I have things to do,
Some of them, even, “important”,
But I just don’t feel like it,
The effort to jump in the stream
And stay there
Weaker than the inclination
To just stand in the breeze.

I suddenly remember that
I bought a new, flavored creamer,
And this inspires me enough
To grab a cup of yesterday’s coffee,
So I don’t have to take my vitamins dry.

You and your glorious body
Will be here soon.
I feel the spread of years,
Its wry sense of sex appeal mocking
The arousal I feel at the idea
Of your Greek-God angles
And perfect teeth.

And then I remember that
You love me for my mind
Which is where all the best sex happens
Anyway.

The alarm clock blares
Jarring me out of my frozen stare,
Screaming me to action.

There's an odd country to visit that lies between sleep and waking. I appreciate the candor and tone here. Excellent poetics (imho). Thanks.
