Waiting by the sea

by Mae D Morey

I stand on the cliffs
of black rock, staring out
at the horizon, at the edge
of the sea's beyond, where
blue meets blue
and sea meets sky.
but I stand on land
waiting
though i cant recall quite why.

below, the ocean crashes
hard against the edge of earth
stone of black tears foam of white
from the suicidal sea's brow
as the sea rushes towards
the jagged rocks below
but I stand on land
waiting
though i cant recall quite why

above me flies a crying
bird, who shrieks then
soars out across the depths
reaching some point high
and distant beyond the rocks
now a speck, it stops and dives
into the sea, then rises quickly
again into the air
but I stand on land
waiting
though i cant recall quite why

the sun behind the scope of clouds
breaks out a ray once or twice
the sky overcast with gray
and the wind from the sea
carries the scent of salt
and kelp, and damp sand
from teh black rocks far below
but I stand on land
waiting
though i cant recall quite why

my feet are bare and the grass
coarse and sharp enough
to cut the soles. grit and
grass, I walk on both
they are smooth as silk to me
but I stand on land
waiting
though i cant recall quite why

from teh distance I can
hear a melody, haunting and sweet
carried upont the wings of wind
and echoed by the memory of sky
and I am moved to tears
by a triggered memory of forgotten days
and memories of days on the sea
but I stand on land
waiting
though i cant recall quite why

As the bagpipes haunt the
hills, I hear their song
and spirits of the past seem
almost real, as my memory
is stirred, and the ghosts
begn to find me again
but I stand on land
waiting
though i cant recall quite why

I stare out at the sea
remembering someone lost,
long ago, and hope seems
almost to have flown from
me, as the bird flew
out above the sea
but I stand on land
waiting
though i cant recall quite why

I cant recall quite why
though i stand here on the cliffs
stare out to the sea
fighting down the urge to cry
searching, searching, searching, though
I know i will never see
but I stand on land
waiting still
though i cant recall quite why.

It has been years now
taht ive come here to
the high black cliffs, with
the gulls and hawks, and the
sea for company.
and the call of the pipes
still echos and haunts
my thoughs
but I stand on land
waiting
though i cant recall quite why

the rocks are jagged, sharp as knives
and the sea seems almost
to call my name, but I wait, and I
search the horizon, stare
to the point where
blue meets blue
seeking clouds that skim that point!
seeking sails of a ship returning
bringing with it that which
once mad my heart sing
bringing back the one lost so long
I would fly to that ship
were i a gull
but I stand on land
waiting
though i cant recall quite why.

no i cant recall why except
all the waters of Earth call my name with his voice
and the cliffs stand high above
the ever running sea, bearing silent
vigil, as do I
at times despair wrings at me
with an iron fist
and I have thought at times of dashing
myself upon the rocks
but surely then I shall never see
clouds of cloth at the point
where blue meets blue
but I stand on land
waiting
though i cant recall quite why
the sea though, tells me wait, with his voice.

The pipes sing mournfully, a song
I so love to hear, as it fills
my soul, I gaze across
the waves, to the place where
blue meets blue
sea meets sky
and on the tip of horizon I
gasp! For there, oh hope I dream not!
There, on the ege of the world
are sails, clouds of cloth filled with air
and my heart soars,
but I stand on land
waiting
though I cant recall quite why.

It drifts towards shore
that grand fine ship
with sails like clouds
and prow to point
the way to where I stand
in hope and joy I
weep and cry
and the sea with his voice
whispers
"I am near"
I should go to the docks to meet him
but I stand on the cliffs
waiting
though I cant recall quite why.

The ship has found harbor,
safely beyond the rocks below
and the town beyond the hill
greets the sailors with a joyous cheer
I wait here still
I stand on land
waiting
though i cant recall quite why

beyond the hill the haunting song
of the bagpipes grows silent
and voices grow loud in greeting
but I stand on land
waiting
though I cant recall quite why
I stand on land
I wait no more
I do not recall why
I merely know

It is time that I leave this land,
For I should wait no more.
