set in stone

by Ava Blu

i wasn't on the plane when you went down to Savannah
when you sat beside the person who would cause a scene
cause you to rethink me

and i wasn't holding your hand as you slipped it in her cunt
when you tasted her on your clothes
tasted her even when you came home to me

i'm trying to remember the last time we spoke
the last time we said something meaningful
meaningful enough to stop us mid-argument

even my heart has become a paperweight you're willing to stop using
just let the books fall
let the paper be swept away
kick me off the table
and dust me only when you're about to fuck her

i wasn't looking at a picture of you and her in the frame we bought together
i wasn't seeing my friends ignoring my eyes because they had just seen you in the local pawnshop disowning our vows

if i were a box on a shelf too high to reach,
would you climb the rails to me?

you didn't want to see me fall down
when you were providing for a new family

i wouldn't be there when you said your father was dying
dying from lung cancer as you inhale smoke in front of him
as you tell him something about death being like a Dr. Seuss book
and he laughs
he laughs

i couldn't be there to see the look on your face
as the next plane crashed.

You have the most amazing conversations with people who are long gone, in one way or another. You write knowing that there isn't much they can say to you at this point. You write anticipating their thoughts and answers, even when you seem to be speculating. I don't know who you're talking to here, but I sure wouldn't want to be on the other end of it. Your wrath never wavers, never stops digging in and sticking around for a good while, and I say that as only one of your readers. This is really great stuff, especially in it's form and that really sharp, flawless fourth stanza.
