Hollywood High

by George Hoerner

walking toward the sand’s edge
looking out over the Atlantic
i blow a kiss to California
no doubt the last kiss

i blow hard but already feel
the winds that started off your coast
sailed over those mountains
then streaked across the open plains and
swung south looking for that kiss
trying to interrupt its flight

it’s not what you wanted
you have all you need
your humming birds
your flowered yard
near the edge of
that canyon

it is now doubt
a nearly perfect end
to what i hope has been
the summation of your dreams

while i recall still
our last kiss
that teenage touch
you practiced well
and i the one that fell
and since then
more than once

but i learned my love
from movies that ended
where boy gets girl
and never taught reality
and what to do with a heart
trying to find that romantic never land
of sweet music, smiles, and closeness
that Hollywood high
found only on the big screen

...george, this is a kingly write, soooo many us see that crap [in Hollywood] and think that's REAL life...a delightful capsule of living the Hollywood way...which ain't no way, eh?

Aside from the fact that this whole piece is awesome, I want to point out that I think the middle two stanzas are kind of shaped like an hourglass, and whether or not that was intentional, I think it actually adds to the feeling of time passing across this poem. Well done as always.

insightful read, so full of the things that create great reflection in your reader, you just capture it all so well -- and it's interesting that it kind of reads like a well scripted and real-life scene...which mirrors the Hollywood aspect....
