Neurology Is An Overplayed Lynyrd Skynyrd Song.

by V. Blake

there's a whole section of my brain
dedicated to things i learned on barstools,
and another more hemorrhaged area
for things i've learned beneath them.

for example,
it is evidently common knowledge
that a broken pool cue is not, in reality,
the most pragmatic means of discerning
a stranger's beer preferences.

and it is regretfully true that bar fights
have much less in common with mosh pits
than one might expect.

but there is one part of my brain
that bleeds more than the others combined,
and it's all thanks to a singular,
six-syllable bruise on its cortex
which reads:

Never.
Touch.
The jukebox.

I love the complexity of this and how it builds up to a simple truth. It's a genius play on words to make such an ugly, unimportant reality really beautiful.

...vince, can i count what i learned in the 70s...i killed a lot of mebrain cells, a lot. so, cept for age, did you get any sawdust on you, man it was all over me...and neurology is what we have left after all we've learned is forgotten, no wait, that's a college education.
