I Like My Women Natural, He Said

by Genevieve Sturrock

carefully applied
eyeshadow
pale glimmering
shades of color
layered to
enhance the
natural shape
of her eyes
a smudge of
darkness
along the
lash line
to deepen
and draw
attention
a heavy sweep
of mascara
adds weight
to her gaze
a light dusting
of pink to
her cheeks
a glistening
coat of gloss
across her
lips

her armor
carefully donned
a perfect mask
to shelter
her fragile
spirit

and you would
hold her down
and scrub it
all away
to examine
minutely
the flaws
tiny red webs of
blood that
creep along
her nose
the thinness
of her lips
you would plunge
your fingers
into the wrinkles
that drag
across her face
measuring the depth
of each one
counting the
cost of her
life's experience

you would do
this out of love
plunder her face
ravage her defenses
and leave her
vulnerable
weak and
naked

what do you offer
in return for
such sacrifice

Ah yes, the eternal question! Will you love me when you know what I am really like. But if I only know your perfected image, what is it that I love??? Good write and the answer should be, I offer only myself not a shining Prince.

There are so many awesome lines in this, but my favorite of them had to be the last three. What a perfectly powerful way you found to end this. I'll be looking forward to more from you, Genevieve!

wow, great reflective words trail poignantly down the page...I agree about the ending it wraps it up perfectly. I feel this one from the female perspective (and wondering if they ever truly realize what they're saying when they proclaim that)

There is so much in this poem....and it is good food for thought!

so my question is, who inspired it? or for whom is it written? it is a poignant piece, a great insight to the fears and vulnerability of the female gender. in my line of business, i often question a woman's "need" to cover her face up and hide her natural beauty behind all the color and gunk.
