Waiting for Real Life to Rez by Alison McKenzieI’m stuck in the after.
I’ve really tried
To assign what’s left of my heart
To the next relationship
But the data doesn’t transfer
And soon enough,
The error catches up…
“Unable to load
Due to syntax error 13475”
Logic tells me that
The sequencing is bugged,
So I run the numbers again,
Check for errors in the script,
Find a new HUD to try.
The latest effort found me singing
Almost a victory
Until an old, familiar virus
Seeped past security
Ruined the RUN PROGRAM
And ended me in a crash.
I’ve become a ghost
Unable to rez in real life,
Reciting the lines
But never really feeling the part.
Only the sigh can be heard.
Only the sigh is real.

Posted by Charlie Morgan on 12/01/09 at 02:54 PM ...maybe the syntax error is in the programming; for instance, you don't need to assign your heart to anyone...that's a rumor. when we assign our love to us, that's a life-long love affair. Oscar Wilde said that. and like garth says the last two lines really power a punch. |
Posted by Ken Harnisch on 12/01/09 at 03:04 PM Keep restarting the computer of your great heart, Alison. It'll take one of these days. |
Posted by George Hoerner on 12/01/09 at 06:15 PM Nice write Alison. The human heart is difficult if not impossible to "debug" regardless of what the psychologists say. But as one told me regarding communication, “one has to keep trying”. |
Posted by V. Blake on 12/01/09 at 09:53 PM I'll join the others praising the last two awesome lines to this poem. I've read it over a few times, and I really enjoy the whole thing, but for some reason the line "i've become a ghost" seems out of place to me. |
