Imagining the Rendezvous by Ken HarnischYou told me how close you were
And I smiled
Knowing why you waited, yet
Thrilled to let me know
And you’re right, having known
That I might have gone to
A place I know quite well
And imagined seeing you
Again.
Imagined the awkwardness of
The moment, the stilted words
That could have morphed into
Something sweeter and longer
Which, while beautiful in the
Invention, might have caused incalculable
Grief in the application
Or maybe not
Another thought that just crossed my mind
Imagining the rendezvous that never was
But the thought alone is nicer
Than it has any right to be.

Posted by Anita Mac on 11/26/09 at 04:44 AM I'm with Vince on those last lines. Such a great bit... and I think we can all find it relatable in some instance. Well put. |
Posted by Rachel Bennett on 11/27/09 at 06:13 AM This is amazing work, and I love it! That "or maybe not" carries a great amount of weight and captures perfectly this poem's tendency to daydream about things that might well have been. You successfully made me smile, Ken. |
