O Lovely Night

by Ken Harnisch

O lovely night
Take me
I am cold and I have sinned
And darkness is the only friend I have

There is sunshine to come
In this ragged life
And light to shine on its
Scars. I am not grieving
Enough to
Damage anything
With a word, or
Even this poem

Yes, she is of the kind
I could not know
In a long-forgotten past;
But I can only look
Forward now, and
Wish to thank all
Who came before for
Their contributions to my evolution.

Still, there is something stony in my heart;
I can hear the gravelly rattle when I walk
And my smile is of the kind
That only little children would
Find charming; its fleeting
Crescent perfect for those blessed
With the gift of short-term memories
And no need to remember them.

O lovely, longed-for night, where is your cloak?
I’m getting colder and the sin is still
Beating in my chest.
But she is gone and
I can no longer make amends

Make amends to the forest, love. And, children are some of the sweetest wisdom-keepers. If they're smiling at you, there is hope.
