Neighbours by Richard VinceIn some guarded, stand offish way,
They bond over their silver superminis
That share the same car park.
I am reminded that I never
Had an ice breaker. Those that
Knew I existed only saw me as
A name on all those parcels
They kept for me.
I was not a neighbour; merely
An unwelcome caller at
Occasional, inopportune moments.
He’ll be sitting in his blue room,
And she’ll be sitting in her pink room,
And they’ll be thinking about
Their new neighbours, but not
About their old one.
I will leave the place exactly
As I found it three years ago,
And it will be as if
I was never there.

As much as I like that line though, my favorite part is definitely:- "I was not a neighbour; merely An unwelcome caller at Occasional, inopportune moments". Unfortunately I don't think that would fit on a flimsy wooden cross stuck haphazardly into the ground, so I'll stick with the former. Anyway, really great work, I adored all of it. It starts off as kind of a simple observation, then goes really introspective-like in a very dark way... Which it should, as all things should in my opinion. Excellent poem undoubtedly; very nicely done! |
