back when

by Charlie Morgan

once, only once i knew it all; ahhh, i remember the day.
the afternoon sun made my shadow long, displaying
the proper respect to me. i was twelve years old.

they wrote a song about it, wanna hear it?

and then when i kissed Diana, patted her rear;
an audience of her Mama was in attendance,
we dated no more, that was sixteen. or so.

they wrote a song about it, wanna hear it?

i puppy-dogged a girl named [lucious] Lucy.
and Marilyn, before Marilyn was popular.
that was so long ago, and i's misunderstood.

and they wrote a song about it, wanna hear it?

i'm the Burma Shave signposts riddled with holes
and filled with half-truths, believe me.
i'm Kaliga, a wooden indian, lonely.

and they wrote a song about that, wanna hear it?

They'll write a song about you someday and maybe your grandson will be singing it and we will all hear it...cause I hear this and I love the tune...smh

A little nostalgia, a little more humor, a fun read!

there is so much in this poem's menagerie of experiences, with these rich slices of life that make living so damn tasty...I loved how the progression in the poem guides the energy, like a perfectly arched rainbow, the colorful experiences pull the reader in to share a rosey sunset of memories

Amazing as usual, Charlie -- as always you leave the audience hesitant to laugh out loud -- yet I always take pleasure in reading your work.
