The New Recruits

by Rachel Bennett

Flanked by each other
Raised chins and gunpowder
Unspoken unknowingness is real
Starched collars and bayonets
They stand ready

Stoic and wistful and tall
The men shiver in the heat
Anxiety fed through intravenous drip
Remembering soft, warm beds
Far-away stares on hand

The aftermath crawls
One long horror story
They march down continuous battlefields
Concerto grosso of dread
In beeping pale rooms

Author's Note: My first deliberate use of chiasmus (in terms of the macro form).
