Nov. 3 - Thermodynamics (King James Version)

by Jason Wardell

"The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be;
and that which is done is that which shall be done:
and there is no new thing under the sun."

--Ecclesiastes 1:9

"1. You cannot win.
2. You cannot break even.
3. You cannot get out of the game.
"
--C.P. Snow

My first impulse is to say
things that don’t mean anything,
so you can forget trying to divorce
the narrator from the author,
neither have much to say,
either could chameleon
into a bowl of vanilla America.

I could say
a few things about things
as if there is such a thing as a signified,
I could brag about how far I can stay per day
on a stationary cycle
or how close to my destination
the treadmill takes me,
the stretching skin
against muscle
against itself.

My second impulse is anger,
against things which will never mean anything,
wanting to fight
with metaphorical knuckles
throbbing and scabbed
from the unsavory characters
riding my tumbledown trains of thought,
against creating,
as if there is such a thing as creating,
against molding and reinforcing.

What has been will be again,
what has been done will be done again,
even the sun is recycled.

So, too, can I not create love when none exists,
nor can I destroy it in myself when it does exist.

I can only mold and reinforce sentiments and
decompose tragedy
and hope that I meet the right mix some time
before entropy.

Author's Note: I want so badly to make this better.
