off-ramp by Angela Thomasit's been almost a month now, a month
that we've dropped messages, phone calls,
letters, the ball, and everything else in sight
while struggling to hug through digital simulacra,
struggling to make sense of what we feel, continue
to feel. you really got me the other day. i had pulled
off the freeway at an exit somewhere to talk to you,
and in your voice i heard insecurity, a pain, a belief
however fleeting that i had laid with another man.
and then i heard something else. "baby, just come home."
your voice cracked, a faltering wish finally escaping
from your lips. and i imagine that it's going to be hard
when i do. when i finally come home, and we settle
into reality and each others arms. "soon, love, soon."

into reality and each others arms." |
