Dark Shadows

by Mark Maxey

Dark shadows faded into the alley
Darkened red by the loss of blood
Let out to ring true the words
Philosophers spoke into deaf ears
Patriots honored in the streets
While the heroes swam in the gutters

In the streets love could be bought
Cents on the dollars
Inflation robbed us all
Fat barons eating the spoils
Children dying of starvation

Industrial gains garnished the applause
United workers sent to prisons
Laborers slaved away hour by hour
Shantytowns cardboard fires illuminated the skies
Dingy hovels of entrenched souls exhaled cries
One hundred years later and oh well
History repeats itself

Newsbytes are only lies wrapped in synonyms
Water cooler talk repeats the same excrement
Society is fed lies that repeats itself and sent
Via texts or emails all the while
The truth is lost in the psycho babble Babylon

Over hill and over dale
Patriotism is lost to another man’s puppet strings
Dead young men and women lives wasted
Never given a voice or a chance for their
Own lives to mean something more

No one ever takes a sigh and just rests
Letting the brain slow down to filter out
The white noise of the babble
Peace only comes when one is at peace
To make a difference just start with yourself
Slowly breathe in…to the count of four
Slowly breathe out…to the count of four
Four times the charm and will open you up
To the real truth

Wow! Been thinking a lot about this theme lately. Seems the world is going to hell in a hand basket but at least it's making good time. Wonderful piece!
