How Many Licks?

by Alison McKenzie

I’ve grown wings
An evolutionary measure
Meant for departure
In just these kinds of times!

So don’t reach for me!
I’m liable to take flight.

I’m getting used to
Ending up half-way ‘cross the globe
In unfamiliar territory just to
Escape the familiar trauma of love.

My shattered heart and I,
We take refuge in the sky.

How much glue does it take
To protect the chewy-nougat center
Of my Tootsie-Roll heart?
The world may never know.

Author's Note: Hehehe, just a reflection on the interesting way I've been dealing with the romantic possibilities...probably a GOOD thing, given my history. I LIKE my heart, so feeling protective of it is a good thing, I think.

Oh my Gosh... *giggle* The title to this threw me back a couple of days to the email I got from Wally Keelhauling Keeler about his most recent Poetency blog. ahem... a most revealing blog (so much so I was thrilled not to have a sip of coffee in my mouth when I opened the link or I'd have choked for sure) and a few older ones, one titled "Lick Me". Anyway... Just this morning I read some fantastic advice about grief/grieving that your poem also speaks to so well. Beautiful, Ali, like your heart.
