A Sad Song for October

by Vikki Owens

Oh October,
you wed us,
we never have time
for these things
with the changing of leaves,
like the changing
of garters
between scenes,
wedded bliss was not made of this,
but you can only cry so long,
they you're dry
and only slip sarcastic smiles
from time to time
to cover misted eyes.

October discoveries,
the mysteries of unraveling
summer mistakes,
bright lights make your head scream,
too much joking this Halloween
might dissolve you to tears,
look at how many years that he wasted
for you,
but you love him.
You do.

October you learned how to sing requiems,
and how to sleep standing up,
and how to be alone for once
and dreaming.

I was particularly interested in this poem due to the title. I'm an October baby, so I had to read it. A gorgeous read.
