close by Ava Blu
the street outside seemed indigo through the lens of my camera,
something in the air sparkled like sapphires falling from the sky
I watched people walk through it,
unable to put the camera down
my fingers gripped the sides,
pulled my eyes deep within the scope
eyelashes touching, almost hurting
from being so close
the people were full of anticipation,
a longing I had lost long ago
they didn’t seem to notice
they really didn’t seem to see me at all,
as the camera flashed for each moment
I,
the better of us,
the one everyone said has the deepest eyes,
became the court jester pulling no one’s strings
and this fact,
this break in the universe
is my only legacy
and the only reason for seeing.

Posted by Jo Halliday on 09/28/09 at 11:27 AM Poignant and strong at the same moment, written with white heat. It pulls in with a force that would throw me back. |
Posted by Gabriel Ricard on 09/29/09 at 02:40 AM What I love about this the most is the structure. This seems like a form we rarely see out of you, and I'm not sure why I keep thinking that. It's interesting, but perfect for the tone and language (especially the 9th and 10th stanzas). I know I love it, but there's something definitely very different about this one. It might be in the form, or it might be that there seems to be a kind of sadness in this that doesn't come up in your work very often. In any case it's stunning and could possibly even be some new territory for you, which makes it even better. |
