"I Will Keep The Cold Out"

by Max Phineas

I seek to protect innocence
where it exists
where I see it
or where it never was.

The soft contour
of your face against the pillow
a calm stream of breath
and a small smile

are all worth saving
from everything that darkens and dampens
and from rains that seep through our silk screens

Cocooned in sheets
you are a vision.
And you are the one
for whom all is worth losing.
