Once a Great Nation

by Tony Whitaker

Why do you watch as their words wash away
the sand on which we stand between our shores?

Why allow this government to pilfer my rights
like making victims of the villains because of their blight?

Why without penitence do they still pay their price
with the lives of our lads who fight for some other's rights?

It was a wonderful world for me as a tyke
it was safe in the streets riding my bike.

I remember walking safely to school
waving at everyone I knew who felt safe too.

But times are tainted for this generation
where carnage and violence await at the station.

Your children are no longer safe on the street
when they’re shot dead where they stand for the shoes on their feet.

Nevermore can they play alone in the park
or you’ll find their quiet body dead in the dark.

And I remember when the world felt our bright light
but now they see us as the edge of the night.

They loved us as we raced our way to the moon
now they feel we race to our doom.

Every year we witness the wanton wasting
like jobs which are jumping to far away places.

Too late our government is quickly approaching
where it does what it will as we just sit watching.

I wonder will we soon perform by permission
where, no more, may we stand in stiff opposition?

Some will scoff, “This is scat from some fool.
The people of this country were and always will be at rule.”

But I’ve seen the scenes in “Once a Great Nation”
as you settled for those who abused my Constitution.

Author's Note: All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent. -Thomas Jefferson
I Love MY Country. I am tired as the US Constitution is continually abused by our bloated governement. I am sure our Founding Fathers would feel that way too!

Forgetting the debate whether at any time was it a great nation, being great once doesn't mean much in the context of now.
